FAQ's About Garden Rooms

What is a SIP Panel Garden Room?

Why Choose a SIP Panel Garden Room?

Our premium range of PU SIP (Polyurethane Structural Insulated Panels) is designed to meet all building regulations and thermal requirements for residential, commercial, and leisure construction projects. PU SIP panels provide superior energy efficiency, strength, and sustainability. Here’s why choosing PU SIP panels will benefit your next project:

Energy Efficiency

  • Low U-Values: Achieve U-values as low as 0.13 W/m²K for exceptional thermal insulation, reducing energy consumption and lowering heating bills.
  • Minimised Thermal Bridging: Continuous insulation eliminates gaps, improving energy efficiency and preventing heat loss.

Speed of Construction

  • Pre-Fabricated Panels: Custom-made and delivered ready for assembly, cutting on-site construction time by up to 50%.
  • Weather Resistance: PU SIP panels are less affected by weather conditions, allowing construction to continue in varying climates.

Strength and Durability

  • High Structural Integrity: PU SIP panels provide exceptional strength, supporting heavy loads, making them ideal for walls, roofs, and floors.
  • Longevity: Resistant to rot, mould, and pests, these panels ensure long-lasting durability for your building.

Design Flexibility

  • Versatile Applications: Perfect for modern and traditional architectural styles, PU SIP panels offer great design flexibility.
  • Customisable Sizes and Shapes: Tailored to meet specific project requirements, providing creative freedom and easy integration into your design.

Environmental Benefits

  • Reduced Waste: Off-site fabrication minimises material waste compared to traditional construction methods, supporting sustainable building practices.
  • Sustainable Insulation: PU foam helps create energy-efficient buildings that contribute to reducing your overall carbon footprint.

Cost-Effectiveness

  • Lower Energy Bills: Improved insulation reduces heating and cooling costs over the building's lifetime.
  • Shorter Build Times: Fast assembly results in reduced labour costs and earlier project completion, increasing overall cost-effectiveness.

Fire and Moisture Resistance

  • Fire Safety: PU SIP panels comply with strict fire safety standards, providing protection and peace of mind.
  • Moisture Control: The closed-cell structure of PU foam resists moisture, preventing dampness and mould issues.

Acoustic Performance

  • Sound Insulation: PU SIP panels offer superior soundproofing properties, making spaces quieter and more comfortable for both residential and commercial use.

Consistency and Quality

  • Precision Manufacturing: Panels are produced under controlled conditions for consistent quality and reliable performance.
  • Building Regulation Compliance: PU SIP panels meet or exceed all relevant building standards, ensuring safety and structural integrity.

Choose PU SIP panels for your next project and experience the benefits of energy efficiency, strength, and design flexibility, all while ensuring a sustainable and cost-effective construction process.

Will I Need Planning Permission?

Whether or not you need planning permission largely depends on the type of building you're planning. For garden buildings, planning permission is usually not required unless the structure is particularly large or extends significantly. However, if you're unsure, it's always best to check with your local planning authority for guidance.

You can find more details in the Permitted Development Guidelines here:

https://www.planningportal.co.uk/permission/common-projects/outbuildings/planning-permission

For business-related projects, planning permission is typically required unless you already have an existing approval that covers your proposed development.

What Type of Base Do I Need?

When constructing a SIP (Structural Insulated Panel) building, choosing the right base is crucial for long-term stability, energy efficiency, and structural integrity. A strong, well-prepared foundation ensures your SIP building performs at its best—reducing maintenance costs, improving insulation performance, and extending the lifespan of the structure.

The ideal base depends on your site’s ground conditions, as well as the size and weight of your SIP building. Common foundation options include adjustable footpads, ground screws, or a full concrete slab—each offering specific advantages based on your project’s needs.

  • Adjustable footpads are quick to install and ideal for uneven ground.
  • Ground screws offer a low-impact, eco-friendly option with minimal excavation.
  • Concrete slab provides maximum durability and load-bearing capacity, perfect for larger or more permanent SIP structures.

For optimal results, we recommend consulting with a foundation specialist to assess your site and recommend the best base for your SIP building

Check out our Foundation Base guide for more information.

How Should Electric Cables & Pipe Work Be Fitted?

For optimal safety, performance, and ease of maintenance, electrical cables and plumbing pipes in a SIP (Structural Insulated Panel) building should always be surface-mounted and battened out. This method avoids compromising the building’s insulation and structural integrity, ensuring your SIP construction remains energy-efficient and compliant with building regulations.

By mounting services on the surface:

  • With no need to cut into the panels.
  • With visible access to all wiring and pipework.
  • Helping reduce energy bills over time.

Proper planning for plumbing and electrical installation in SIP buildings enhances functionality while protecting the efficiency and longevity of your structure.

Can a uncompleted Garden Building Be Exposed to Wet Weather?

To protect your investment and ensure long-term durability, it’s essential to make your SIP (Structural Insulated Panel) building weatherproof as quickly as possible. While the SIP panels are designed to resist moisture for short periods, prolonged exposure to rain or damp conditions can compromise the structural integrity and insulation performance.

We strongly recommend that you:

  • Complete the roof and cladding as soon as possible
  • Shield the structure during construction delays.

This proactive approach helps:

  • Mould growth, and warping
    of the SIP panels.
  • Keeping your project on schedule and budget.

Protecting your unfinished SIP structure from wet weather is a simple step that ensures your building stays strong, energy-efficient, and ready for long-term use.

Will My SIPS Panel Garden Room Need Extra Isulation?

Your garden building is constructed using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)—a cutting-edge building technology known for its strength, durability, and superior energy efficiency.

SIP construction creates a highly insulated, airtight structure that delivers excellent thermal performance, helping to keep warmth in during winter and heat out during summer.

Thanks to the high thermal values of SIPs, your garden room, garden office, or outdoor studio will not require any additional insulation.

This ensures year-round comfort while reducing energy costs and improving sustainability.

How Long Should a Garden Room Last?

Garden buildings constructed with Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are exceptionally strong, durable, and sustainable, offering long-term performance with minimal environmental impact.

SIPs construction promotes energy efficiency and provides a robust, weather-resistant structure built to last.

With proper care and regular maintenance, your SIPs garden room, garden office, or outdoor studio can deliver a lifespan of 40 to 50 years or more.

Like any high-quality building, ongoing upkeep ensures it continues to perform well and remain a valuable, functional space for decades.

How Long Is Order to Delivery Time?

We strive to ensure fast and efficient delivery of your garden building.

Our SIP kit buildings are typically available within 2 to 6 weeks from the time of order, depending on availability and any bespoke customisations that may extend the lead time.

How will My Garden Room Kit be Packaged & Delivered?

Your flat pack garden building will arrive securely palletised and wrapped for maximum protection during transit.

Depending on the size and weight of your building, we’ll select the most suitable haulier service.

Most deliveries are made using equipment such as portable forklifts or pallet trucks, allowing for efficient unloading at your chosen location.

If you have any specific delivery requirements—such as preferred delivery times or site access details—please let us know at the time of order.

It’s essential to inform us of any access restrictions (e.g. narrow driveways, height limits, or uneven ground), so we can coordinate with the haulier and ensure the most efficient and safe delivery solution.

Proper planning ensures a smooth delivery of your prefabricated garden room, SIP kit, or outdoor building kit right to your doorstep

Do I need planning permission to put a garden building in my garden?

When considering the construction of domestic outbuildings, planning permission is typically not required, as long as the structure is used for a domestic purpose related to your home.

There are however specific scenarios where you may need planning permission. If any of the following conditions apply, it’s important to check with your local planning authority for confirmation:

  1. If you plan to build the shed within 5 metres of any part of your house.
  2. If the total ground area covered by buildings or other structures in the garden (excluding the original house) exceeds 50% of the total garden area.
  3. If the original planning consent for your property includes a condition that prohibits garden sheds, outhouses, or similar structures, regardless of consent from the local planning authority.
  4. If your property is a listed building or located within a conservation area or an area of outstanding natural beauty, where development restrictions may apply.
  5. If you intend to use the garden building for business purposes or to store goods related to a business.
  6. Additionally, no part of the garden building should be placed closer to the public highway than your existing house, or closer than 20 metres from the highway, whichever is nearer.

To ensure you comply with all regulations, it’s always best to consult with your local planning authority before proceeding with construction.

Do I need any other building consent?

If your property is a listed building or located in a conservation area, it is highly likely that you will need the relevant listed building consent or conservation area consent before proceeding with any construction.

Additionally, some properties may be subject to restrictive covenants, which could prevent you from building in your garden. To determine if such restrictions apply to your property, you should check the property register at HM Land Registry for any entries related to this type of development. If a restrictive covenant exists, you will need to seek consent from the party benefiting from the covenant.

It’s also important to be aware that the current planning permission for your property may include conditions that override permitted development rights. These conditions can sometimes apply to entire areas, so it’s crucial to consult with your local planning authority to confirm whether any restrictions are in place.

If you’re uncertain about whether you can erect a garden building without needing planning permission, it’s advisable to err on the side of caution and contact your local planning authority directly. In most cases, you should receive a response right away.

Please note, we accept no liability for the accuracy of the information provided in this notice. We always recommend seeking professional advice to ensure compliance with all regulations.
